Festivals: Clerkenwell Design Week

Clerkenwell Design Week, run this year by newly appointed show director William Knight, always has eyes bigger than its stomach – architect and design talks, specially commissioned street installations, new collection debuts and studio showcases mean there is a huge amount to fit into just three days.

Highlights include a celebration of 15 years of Ron Arad’s classic Tom Vac chair, with Swiss design powerhouse Vitra inviting architects and designers to “tailor” their own vision of the chair’s sleek lines. Vitra will show the completed pieces throughout the festival. Ron Arad himself will appoint the winner.

For furniture, lighting and product design head to the Farmiloe Building, where the likes of Benchmark, Decode and Pinch will exhibit their contemporary craftsmanship in the Design Factory segment. The little details – small accessories, textiles and ceramics – are showcased in the crypt at St James’s church; up-and-coming designers from Estonia to Montreal fill the exciting line-up for the Platform show in the House of Detention.

May also sees the next instalment of the popular Modern Shows, an excellent edit of mid-century furniture and smaller pieces.

The event takes place, appropriately enough, in the recently refurbished Grade II-listed Haggerston School, which was designed in 1964 by the architect Erno Goldfinger.

Clerkenwell Design Week runs from May 20-22; clerkenwelldesignweek.com. The Midcentury Show East will be held on May 11 at Weymouth Terrace, London E2 8LS; modernshows.com
