This hand-tinted photographic print is taken from a travelling salesman’s sample book and dates from the 1910s.
It is included in a show of photographs at New York’s Morgan Library & Museum, founded in 1924 to house the collections of financier John Pierpont Morgan.
The assorted 91 boiled sweets – among them butter balls, Klondike nuggets and oxheart cherries – illustrate some of the range of candies available at the turn of the past century from Brandle & Smith, a Philadelphia confectionery business.
‘A Collective Invention: Photographs at Play’ is at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York (themorgan.org) from February 14 to May 18
