The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is treating a shooting outside the UK parliament as a terrorist incident “until we know otherwise”.

In a statement the police urged people to avoid Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster & Lambeth Bridge, parts of Victoria Street and Victoria Embankment.

It added:

We thank the public for their assistance and urge people to remain calm, be alert and vigilant.

The Houses of Parliament remain under security lockdown after it was confirmed that a police officer was stabbed outside the entrance to Parliament and a number of pedestrians hit by a car on Westminster Bridge.

Prime minister Theresa May is understood to be safe, having been evacuated from the site by car.
