Bobby Hutcherson has been the lead voice on jazz vibraphone ever since first recording for Blue Note in the early 1960s. He left the label in 1977, but returns as a flagship signing for the label’s 75th anniversary.
The vibraphonist is in superb form whether spinning lines or letting his notes hover sensuously for maximum effect.
Organ powerhouse Joey De Francesco and drummer Billy Hart deliver urgent, supple grooves, while David Sanborn’s brittle, sour-toned, and soulful alto sax works surprisingly well as both contrast and foil.
