A suspected terrorist attack has killed at least 19 people and injured more than 50 as they left a pop concert in Manchester. Police are treating the explosion that rocked the arena in the Northwest English city as a terrorist incident until proved otherwise. A suspected bomb went off at 10:35 PM as people reported a huge bang while they left at the end of a performance by US teen actress-turned-singer, Ariana Grande.
Witnesses said the blast occurred as people left the event. Mobile phone footage shows concert-goers trying to escape the venue and emergency services arriving. The venue said the explosion had taken place in the public space just outside the arena.
The blast is the worst terrorist incident in the UK since the London attacks of 2005, which killed 52 people. Police have asked people to stay away from the area and to remain vigilant. The city remained on edge.
At around 1:30 AM, bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device near the arena in a small park by Manchester Cathedral. It turned out to be discarded clothing. Train services from Manchester Victoria Station, situated below the concert arena, were suspended, and will not run on Tuesday. Britain's threat level from terrorism is at severe, which means an attack is likely.
