The Canadians are coming.

Donald Trump’s neighbour to the north, Justin Trudeau, will be making a trip to Washington next week for his first official meeting with the White House’s new occupant.

On Thursday, the White House said in a statement that Mr Trudeau will meet with Mr Trump on Monday, February 13. “President Trump and Prime Minister Trudeau look forward to a constructive conversation on strengthening the relationship between our two nations,” the statement said.

The meeting will be a careful balancing act for Mr Trudeau, a 45-year old self-declared feminist whose campaign message of “sunny ways” stood as a stark contrast to Mr Trump’s protectionist rhetoric. Mr Trudeau will be challenged to keep Canada’s most important economic relationship on an even keel while keeping faith with Canadians, many of whom disapprove of Mr Trump, according to recent polls.
