Forces under the control of Khalifa Haftar, the military strongman who controls eastern Libya, say they have seized back two major oil ports which they lost to rivals from the west of the country early this month.

The self-styled Libyan National Army announced that it regained Es Sider and Ras Lanuf from a militia that had said that it had handed them to the United Nations-backed government in Tripoli in the west.

Libya’s National Oil Corporation, which is based in Tripoli, ran the ports when the facilities were under the control of Mr Haftar who had seized them in September.

Reuters news agency cited Ahmed al-Mismari, spokesman for the LNA, who said that a handover of the ports to the NOC in Tripoli was not guaranteed this time.
