Thunderbird School of Global Management has appointed Larry Penley as its next president (dean). Dr Penley has been interim chief academic officer and provost at the Arizona school since April 2012 and will replace former astronaut Barbara Barrett. She in turn has been acting president following the departure earlier this year of Angel Cabrera to become president of George Mason University, in Virginia.

For almost 20 years Dr Penley was professor of management at Arizona State University and was dean of the Carey School of Business there. Mr. Penley served as the president of Colorado State University between 2003 and 2008. On his personal website he now describes himself as “a management consultant specialising in strategic management and market positioning”.

Dr Penley is a UCLA certified corporate director and has served on several corporate boards. He holds the PhD in management from the University of Georgia and bachelor and masters degrees from Wake Forest University. He has also held faculty positions in Mexico and Venezuela.

Since arriving at Thunderbird earlier this year, Dr Penley has spent time assessing the degree programmes and the student experience. “My focus as president and chief academic officer will be on students, employers and the quality of the learning experience,” he says. “Everything else will flow from this.”
