Sir, Paul Lindsell of the Data Governance Forum calls for UK companies to have access to information about new EU data protection rules ( Letters, December 20). As the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is prioritising the task of providing clear advice, guidance and training to businesses on all they will need to know about the new regulations.

The final shape of the rules will be clear early next year. There will then be a two-year transition period. Clearly, timely information and guidance from the regulator will be essential — at the beginning of the process.

It is true the reforms will mean change for business, but companies can be reassured that the ICO will be doing all in its power to ease the transition and to make sure UK plc is fully ready for the change.
