Former Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart returns with an ambitious undertaking – a concept double album inspired by an unpublished William Burroughs story that was itself inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost.
The result sprawls for almost 90 minutes, too great a length for the scope of Hart’s buzz-saw power-pop. But a number of moments stand in worthy comparison to his old band: the claustrophobic organ and choppy riffs of “I Am Death”; also the lilting melodies of “So Far From Heaven”, complete with Bowie-esque vocals and a neat whistled solo middle section.
