Most tracks on this excellent four-CD set are readily available individually, but here they trace the evolution of the saxophonist’s classic quartet, one of the greatest in jazz.
The set starts with John Coltrane playing in Stockholm in 1960 as a sideman with Miles Davis, continues with the quartet’s members joining one-by-one on recordings for Roulette and Atlantic and ends with the final line-up recording for Impulse in 1962.
Big band tracks and live recordings, some featuring the equally iconic multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, complete the picture.
