Guillermo del Toro, 2013
Warner
What could unite the world? Melting ice-caps? Global pandemic? No, it turns out it’s colossal armoured creatures rising from the Pacific like the contents of an enormous angry bouillabaisse.
The answer? Equally huge robots operated by two mind-melded humans and marshalled by Idris Elba (Best Furrowed Brow in a Motion Picture).
Guillermo del Toro takes the time to invest the characters in this $190m blockbuster with back stories but doesn’t skimp on the fisticuffs, which even on the 2D small screen retain a fearsome wallop.
