Bobby Wellins wrote the five-part Culloden Moor Suite in 1961, and his wry themes and light-toned tenor sax remind me of his playing on Stan Tracey’s Under Milk Wood Suite.

This first-time recording, arranged in collaboration with the SNJO, brings Wellins’ work vividly to life in knowing, contemporary colours.

“Gathering” opens with airy sax and gains pathos from light-textured brass and the final swell on “Aftermath” is subtle and bittersweet. At the centre “Battle”, features duelling sax and drums and blasts of jagged brass polyphony.
