Power dressing: David Archibald

David Archibald, 55, is president of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars North America, a post he has held since 2011. Archibald joined the car company in October 2002 as regional director for Europe and South Africa.

Suit by Charles Tyrwhitt

Working for a British brand like Rolls-Royce, I think being dressed from Savile Row or Jermyn Street fits nicely. Charles Tyrwhitt’s styles are quite traditional yet quite comfortable. I travel a lot and the suits jump in and out of suitcases – all the while allowing me to look as I should. My body shape doesn’t work with Italian-cut suits, although Zegna does fit my frame well. Suit-wise, I tend to be fairly safe. I sometimes go with a different lining for a little je ne sais quoi, but it’s important to always appear businesslike.

Shirt by Hackett

I plan my outfits to maximise what I can get out of them in order to pack less. The first thing I bought from Hackett was a tweed jacket. I tend to work quite long days so the shirt has to be just soft enough in the neck – clean and crisp, never crumpled. I also have a long back so I need an extra long shirt that I can tuck in easily. In the business I’m in, I want clients to be listening to what I am saying and not be distracted by what I’m wearing.

Tie by Hermès

I wear ties almost every day and, with the exception of when I’m doing television interviews, I gravitate towards those with a wild print. Being Scottish, one of my favourites is a Hermès with a Scotsman-playing-bagpipe motif. It can be a conversation point.

Shoes by Church’s

I like brogues for formal occasions. I’ve been wearing them for the past 20 years – I love the fact that they’re comfortable and flattering. The leather is softer and they just feel great on. Again, I’m fairly traditional: lace-ups for work, slip-ons for leisure. It’s keeping in line with the image you would expect of someone in my position. It’s traditional rather than over the top.

Watch by Rolex

I received this Oyster Perpetual from my wife for our 20th anniversary. I went with a blue face to set off the gold. The smaller dial also allows me to go from business meetings to black tie. A watch is important in an auto executive’s wardrobe because it is often an extension of the brand they work for. I find that most luxury auto clients are also watch collectors.
