Having recently visited Dundee, alas just before the opening of the V&A, I agree with Edwin Heathcote’s assessment of the surrounding whole: the waterfront “regeneration” is a bit of a dog’s breakfast ( Life & Arts, FT Weekend, September 15-16). But “brutal Gorbals estates” is a misnomer. The working-class Glasgow Clydeside — romanticised in retrospect, to be sure — had a community ethos that was destroyed along with the Gorbals tenements in the forced relocation to the brutal estates on the city’s periphery. Those still standing are both blights on Glasgow’s landscape and petri-dishes for societal malaise.
