Guitarist Marc Ribot’s fiery power trio adds raw blues and thumping backbeat swing to the expressionism of mid-1960s jazz. There are covers of Albert Ayler’s “Bells” and “The Wizard”, and late-period Coltrane is referenced both by the mesmerising opener, “Dearly Beloved”, and climactic closer, “Sun Ship”.

Ribot is in blistering form and his stinging attack, polytonal lines and speed-of-light strums are powerfully matched by Chad Taylor’s tight melodic drumming. Two standards provide contrast, and Henry Grimes a bass solo highlight on the haunting “Old Man River”.
