Experimental feature

After her disappointingly polished Spinnerette project, former Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle – noughties descendant of 1990s alt-rockers Hole and Babes in Toyland – is back with a more abrasive, much better solo album.

“Don’t Mess with Me” is snarled riot-grrrl defiance while “Meet the Foetus/Oh the Joy” channels themes of obsessive love and motherhood into intense riffs and hammering drums. Away from the grungy guitars and hollering we find Dalle shifting into gothic PJ Harvey territory on “I Don’t Love You”, a magnificently atmospheric disavowal of her estranged father.
