John Taylor’s lovely solo piano album bursts with invention, unfolding narratives and technical expertise. It opens with the gently undulating contours and rich landscapes of the three-part “Ambleside Suite”, continues with the lyrical impressionism of “Phase the Second” and delivers a highlight with the brief “Episode” – a sparse, haunting melody developed into dissonant fragments.
The first of two covers, Kenny Wheeler’s sparky mid-CD waltz “3/4 pm”, bustles without clutter and a rich and ruminative reading of Ellington’s “Fantasy in D” closes the set.
