Not too surprising that the somewhat mathematically-minded alto saxophonist John Gallagher should be drawn to the music of serialist composer Anton Webern. He shares Webern’s penchant for wide-intervalled lines leaping rigorously over dense harmonies – track title “The Secret Code”, after Op 28, is particularly apt.
Here, a downtown sextet adapts Webern’s thematic material into angular, rhythmically astute and multi-textured jazz fusion. Highlights include vibraphonist Matt Henman and organist Russ Lossing capturing Webern’s sense of mystery and vocalist Margaret Grebowicz delivering original German lyrics on “Seventh Ring”.
