Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra have taken last year’s student protests in their native Quebec as an inspiration for their new album, whose full title, shortened above, contains an earthy expletive. The confrontational approach continues inside as the band, an offshoot from anarchist agit-rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor, rail against inequality and oppression, guitars scribbling at a furious pitch, violins droning, drums clattering. When the band are at full flow it’s powerful and charged, although Efrim Menuck’s vocals, a mannered punk yelp, lack the force of his guitar-playing.
