On the first disc, Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton read poems of the first world war (Owen, Sassoon, Blunden and anachronistically, Housman) to a minimal musical backing from Show Of Hands.

On the second disc, the musicians take over, playing the songs now indelibly associated with the trenches and the home front, from “Goodbyee” to “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary”.
