It is seriously hot in Oklahoma in August – as we are continually reminded in this screen version of Tracy Letts’ play about an explosive family reunion. Luckily, it stays just this side of over-baked, thanks to a starry ensemble cast. After the death of her husband, matriarch Violet (Meryl Streep) summons her children to the family home. Along come Karen (Juliette Lewis), Barbara (Julia Roberts), and Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) – and with them a bag of issues, which get thoroughly aired over one helluva heated dinner.
