Sony quietly announced yesterday that its latest Cyber-shot digital cameras will be the first Sony point-and-shoot models to support SD and SDHC cards. The new cameras all offer hybrid storage-card slots that can handle both SD/SDHC and Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick format.
So could this be the beginning of the end for the Memory Stick format? Probably, but after 11 years defending the Memory Stick, Sony still isn’t quite ready to admit defeat in this long running format war.
Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics president who announced the shift during the company’s annual CES press conference, says the company will continue to develop the Memory Stick format, and new gadgets will still have Memory Stick slots, even though Sony plans to start making SD cards itself. “It’s all about giving consumers choice,” he says.
