More Life

Ed Sheeran’s record for most first day Spotify streams for his new album lasted a scant two weeks. Drake is the new record-holder with More Life, not an official album but (in the Canadian rapper’s words) “a playlist with all original music”.

The 22 tracks cycle fluently through a range of styles, from claustrophobic trap anthem “Gyalchester” to the delicate textures of “Passionfruit”. Drake’s usual preoccupations are to the fore (success, women, success with women) but a large roster of guests leaven the navel-gazing.

Some resemble a late-night studio joke, such as the fleeting juxtaposition between Lionel Richie and Lil Wayne in “Blem”. Others are more thoughtfully curated, especially the contingent of British acts (Giggs, Skepta, Sampha). The results emphasise Drake’s way of bridging local and global, rap’s first “glocal” star.
