This Californian folk-rock band writes widescreen melodies that bubble up from tiny details, such as the carillon waltz that starts ‘Bored In A Belly’ before slow martial snare drums take over; or the woozy psychedelic glissandi of ‘Smile’, whose nods to the Beach Boys extend beyond the title. The rockabilly chug beneath ‘A Fool’s Campaign’ is at odds with the doomed romanticism of the verses.
