Nicole Holofcener, 2013
20th Century Fox
This midlife romcom about two divorcees (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini) clumsily courting would have had a touching elegiac quality even before Gandolfini’s death last year. But it is the very opposite of morose.
Holofcener’s writing is snappy and the screen positively glows with the stars’ rare and seemingly effortless chemistry – even the laughter seems natural (outtakes suggest it is). Gandolfini has charm to spare as a loveable lump but it is Louis-Dreyfus who steals it, proving again her peerless comic chops and expanding her dramatic ones.
