Escape Plan unites Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in an attempt to break out from a prison so high-security that inmates are kept in glass boxes and surveilled 24/7. It’s silly and sleazy but not completely without imaginative energy, and some moments stand out: the sound of a needle going through Stallone’s bicep as though punching through hide. The actor’s over-powdered face looks more than ever only seconds from nodding suddenly asleep. Now, at 67, he has an increasing inability to articulate which means all his words tragically roll off him like the wrong answers.
In comparison Arnie, 66, is completely electric. How handsome he is! That expensively freckled face, tanned to nutmeg from summer clambakes in the Vineyard . . . In one indelible 20-second scene, the actor shrieks in German, falling to his knees with rage, furiously pleading, dissolving into his native tongue and almost passing out with the relief.
