John Wilson Orchestra

Cole Porter in Hollywood

(Warner Classics)

Don’t throw out Ella Fitzgerald’s Cole Porter songbooks yet, but here is a very different take on these popular classics.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Porter’s death on 15 October the John Wilson Orchestra has put together a wide-ranging selection of songs from his Hollywood musicals, from Kiss Me, Kate to Can-Can, Silk Stockings to High Society.

The singers, good though they are, face competition from giants of the past (Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby), but Wilson’s magnificent players, using period orchestrations, need not fear comparison with anybody.
