The rock-rap crossover is a match made in marketing demographic heaven but it has a chequered history: on one side Run DMC and Aerosmith matching each other riff for rap on “Walk This Way”; on the other dire collaborations like that between Linkin Park and Jay-Z.

Blakroc’s matching of retro blues-rock duo The Black Keys with various emcees, overseen by Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damon Dash, occupies the better end of the scale.

Mos Def appears on a laidback bluesy number, The Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon turns in a surreal street rap over doodling psychedelic guitars and Dan Auerbach unleashes raw, greasy guitar riffs on “Hope You’re Happy”, which plots a course between the hyper-masculine posturing of Led Zeppelin and hip-hop.
