Tesco has ended its foray into selling second-hand cars online, exactly a year after launching Tesco Cars.

The website, offering thousands of used cars for sale, in which Tesco had a 25 per cent stake, is being wound down.

The closure is part of a move by Philip Clarke, chief executive, to concentrate on Tesco’s core businesses. Another venture, Tesco Home Services, which offered handyman services, has also closed.

Mr Clarke is due to unveil his strategy for turning round Tesco’s UK business in two weeks’ time.

People familiar with the situation indicated that, although Tesco had a good customer response to the used-car site, it had struggled to secure a good supply of cars.
