Short Term 12 – review

This US indie drama about a care home for kids has perceptive moments but soapy tendencies

It tries hard, this US indie drama about a care home for problem kids. Brie Larson is tough and touching as the mid-twenties supervisor, striving to sideline her own issues (abuse in childhood, fear of relationships) to help the all-sorts, all-ethnicities troubled teens. In Destin Daniel Crotton’s script and direction, there are perceptive scenes and abrasive moments. But there’s also a soapy need to launder every problem into a happy or “closured” denouement.
