The clean-toned guitarist’s second ‘Unity’ release expands the original quartet to a quintet and presents a set of twist-and-turn, genre-crossing sagas themed on notions of kin.

The biblical curtain raiser “On Day One” lasts an epic 15 minutes, “Rise Up” is a rousing panorama powered by Metheny’s fast and furious strums and the title track incorporates the sounds of electronic dance music. Saxophonist Chris Potter is still on the rampage, but now his solos emerge from sustained orchestrations made lush by multi-instrumentalist newcomer Giulio Carmassi.
