From Mr Eric Hookway.

Sir, Clive Aslet (Comment, September 6) implies that the membership – 3.6m subscribers – supports the position taken by the National Trust on planning reforms.

We don’t know. We subscribers have not been canvassed for our views. I’d guess, but don’t know, that most members join the trust to support its heritage stewardship. If we feel strongly about the countryside aspects of planning reform we can join an interest group.

The National Trust leadership appears to support a campaign that stretches its role and can only harm its reputation.

Eric Hookway, Kendal, Cumbria, UK
