Candacraig House, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, £2m

Where: In the highlands of west Aberdeenshire, two miles from the village of Bellabeg, 45 miles from Aberdeen airport.

What: A 12-bedroom, 11-bathroom traditional Scots baronial castle dating back to the 17th century, and three guest cottages set in 14 acres of woodland. Candacraig is currently owned by the comedian Billy Connolly.

Why: In the Cairngorms National Park, with the River Don running through the valley below, the mansion is surrounded by hills such as Morven at 871 metres, Ealasaid at 792 metres, and Ben Avon at 1,171 metres. The area is ideal for hill walking and salmon fishing.

Where: In the province of Girona, about 100 miles from Barcelona airport.

Where: Ten minutes’ drive from the town of Ketchum and the Sun Valley ski resort. Friedman Memorial Airport is seven miles away, with daily flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle.
