Beverley Knight: Soul UK

Beverley Knight

Soul UK

Adele and Amy Winehouse are superb soul singers but the UK music industry seems incapable of breaking equivalent black talent. Beverley Knight stands out as one of the few black UK soul singers with any sort of exposure, notching up middling chart success with seven albums, the latest of which is a tribute to the neglected stars of British soul.

Covers range from Heatwave’s 1977 slow jam “Always and Forever” to 1980s/90s hits by Omar and Roachford, sung impeccably by Knight – too impeccably, really; a bit of risk-taking would have been welcome. But the lack of opportunity for black British soul singers doesn’t encourage risk-taking.
