John Bolton firing

Foreign policy ultra-hawk John Bolton joined the growing list of Donald Trump’s ex-aides when the US president fired him from the position of national security adviser after a series of disagreements over Iran, North Korea, Russia and finally Afghanistan.

Mr Bolton had already called for regime change in Iran and North Korea before replacing HR McMaster in the White House, but his forthright expression of hardline policy views clashed with Mr Trump’s attempts to salvage some sort of deal with Iran, North Korea and the Taliban before the 2020 US presidential election.

The disagreements continued as Mr Bolton contradicted the US president’s claim to have fired him, tweeting, “I offered to resign last night and the President said, ‘Let’s talk about it tomorrow’.”
