Rumer: Seasons of My Soul

Seasons of My Soul

If you judge a singer by her fans then what to make of Rumer, aka Londoner Sarah Joyce? Burt Bacharach invited her to tea, Elton John asked her to perform with him and John Prescott tweeted his approval after seeing her on TV. So expect sophistication, a 1970s singer-songwriter vibe and the sort of voice to make a Labour Party bruiser’s heart melt.

Her debut album can be formulaic, as with the jaunty piano-pop of “Am I Forgiven?”, but Rumer’s wistful, unhurried vocals, relating tales of love and heartbreak (mainly the latter), are entrancing. Prezza’s comparison to Karen Carpenter is spot on.
