Your Big Read article “Markets yield to recession fears” (August 17) made for interesting reading, with the exception of one sentence, which indulged in hemispheric bias.

“This phenomenon picked up speed over the summer” seems to indicate that residents of equatorial climes, who have only one season, should be aware of what months are implied. It is also unfair that residents of the southern hemisphere have to kow-tow to the northern hemisphere’s description of what constitutes summer.

The sweltering summer of our discontent will not pass till this hemispheric oppression is replaced by the universally understood use of calendar months.
