Sonny Rollins

Holding the Stage

The fourth edition of the saxophonist’s Road Shows series of live recordings presents the veteran saxophonist commanding the centre stage, virtually to the exclusion of all others.

The collection opens with a gorgeous reading of Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” from London in 2007, and reaches back to the quirky juxtaposition of balladry and bounce found on “Disco Monk”, recorded in Finland in 1979.

Rollins is in magisterial form throughout, whether delivering lush romance and dazzling a capellas or creating complex music from the merest hint of a tune.
