David O Russell, 2013
Entertainment in Video
Big hair, big disco-era lapels, big acting and some big laughs. David O Russell’s hugely entertaining con caper plays like Scorsese with the camp set to max. Amy Adams is cast against type as a vampish faux-English aristo who helps relieve the rich of their wealth. Christian Bale, who no longer has a type, here becomes cartoonishly Jewish scam-artist Irving Rosenfeld, with impossible hair-do and exaggerated New Jersey drawl. The plot is as elaborately woven as Irving’s toupée combover – Feds on the take, dames on the make, double- and triple-crossing galore – but somehow ringmaster Russell keeps this circus the right side of risible.
