Giovanni Mirabassi Quartet

No Way Out

This absorbing set of originals flags up its ’60s Blue Note roots two tracks in with the Herbie Hancock homage “Two Finger Snap”.

But pianist/composer Mirabassi tweaks the acoustic quartet formula with a contemporary narrative flow and adding references to his Italian roots.

“The Snow White Syndrome” features glistening vibes from the American Stefan Harris but climaxes with a moody swirl of drums, “Canzone” is gently Latin-flavoured and “Il Bandolero Stanco” stately and melodic.

Main-attraction Harris is confident and poises; Mirabassi is his match.
