New York socialite Jasmine (Cate Blanchett – masterfully imbuing the Woody Allen role with her own alpha-femininity) pulls up at her sister Ginger’s house looking for temporary asylum after the collapse of her marriage to a Madoff-style shyster (Alec Baldwin).
Depressed, neurotic, self-absorbed, Jasmine nevertheless stands out like a prim, pristine lily against the shabby chic of Ginger (Sally Hawkins) and her seedy entourage. All she needs is a rich man to make it all better: enter Peter Sarsgaard with a twinkle in his eye. A bluesy, bittersweet tale about the dangers of self-delusion.
