A sell-off on Wall Street picked up steam on Tuesday as the opening bell approached.

The S&P 500 was down by 1.3 per cent to 2,343.2, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.2 per cent to 20,664.8 and the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.5 per cent to 5,815.7.

Selling in bank shares also accelerated, with the S&P 500 banks index recently down more than 4 per cent.
