The late Gil Evans was the greatest arranger of postwar jazz by a country mile. His recordings with Miles Davis are jazz essentials, but his own-name catalogue is less well known.
Composer/arranger Mike Gibbs redresses the balance with eight adaptations of Evans classics, and adds two in-style pieces of his own. “Bilbao Song” and “Las Vegas Tango” capture the panoramic melancholy and firm, stately rhythms of the original, Ornette Coleman’s “Ramblin’” is jaunty and Finn Peters delivers an extended alto sax highlight on “St Louis Blues”.
