From Mr James Preston.
Sir, Peter Goodall raises an interesting point concerning dress standards in Paris (Letters, September 9). An English friend of mine, based in Paris, working for an American organisation, recently found himself in quite a state of cultural confusion regarding sartorial codes. Dress instructions for an internal conference in California included the recommendation to wear “comfortable pants” for a group exercise.
While my friend is familiar with cross-cultural reconciliation issues, he did, nevertheless, pack Y-fronts with his “slacks” to ensure he “covered all bases”, so to speak.
