From Lord Kilclooney.
Sir, The European Commission response to the Swiss vote against the free movement of persons is typical of an institution that is unanswerable to the electorate. As a former MEP I caution against trade threats with Switzerland (“Brussels warns Swiss over EU access”, February 10) – not only is more than 50 per cent of Swiss trade with the EU but the commission should not ignore the substantial trade by EU countries into Switzerland. Instead of trade threats the commission should accept the increasing concern across the EU about freedom of movement. To fail to do so will accelerate the growth of political parties that campaign on this issue, with major consequences for the future of the EU itself.
