Kier’s departing finance director, Deena Mattar, may see life in a harsher light after handing over her rose-tinted spectacles to her successor, Haydn Mursell.

The scarlet-framed glasses, which passed hands at Ms Mattar’s retirement do, were given to her nine years ago by her predecessor, Duncan Brand. As one of the construction industry’s few female finance directors, Ms Mattar became the subject of media scrutiny four years ago when it emerged that she and John Dodds, then Kier boss, were having an affair. The couple have since married and Ms Mattar is leaving less than a year after Mr Dodds’s retirement.

With Kier outperforming many of its peers, and issuing an upbeat trading statement on Friday, Mr Mursell may have little need for the glasses.
