The Kenan-Flagler school at the University of North Carolina has appointed taxation professor Douglas Shackelford as its next dean. He will take up the position in February.

Prof Shackelford, who has been an academic at Kenan-Flagler since 1998, has been one of the driving forces behind the school’s premium online MBA, MBA@UNC, which launched in 2011.

Prof Shackelford received his PhD from the University of Michigan and has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Oxford and Maastricht in Europe, as well as Stanford University in the US. He is also a research associate in public economics at the US National Bureau of Economic Research.

Prof Shackelford will replace James Dean who held the post from 2008 until he became provost of the university on July 1, 2013. John Evans has been interim dean since then.
