We were promised a boring Budget. What we are getting is a joke a minute from the supposedly famously dry chancellor Philip Hammond.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of his one-liners:

  • “They don’t call it the last Labour government for nothing”
  • On his infamous nickname: “This is the spreadsheet bit…bear with me, I have a reputation to defend”
  • The party opposite knows something about the technology of driverless vehicles.
  • [Corbyn] is now so far down a black hole that even Stephen Hawking has disowned him.
Rupert Harrison, a man who knows a thing or too about Budget gags from his role as George Osborne’s chief adviser, quips:

We will add to this list. He’s here all week.
