Kazakhmys’ investors, worried about creeping government control after the purchase of 11 per cent of the mining group by Kazakh sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna, should turn to former BAE Systems chairman Sir Richard “Dick” Evans.

Sir Richard – known for clinching the £43bn al-Yamamah arms deal with the Saudis by swallowing sheep’s eyeballs – is a director of the fund and has been advising Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev on setting up Samruk since 2006.
